DOI Takes Over Kavka – PART 1: DOI Collective (5/01 – 25/01/2017)

Conversation. Fragments

DOI Collective = Alina Cristea + Ine Vlassaks

Since April 2016 we began making work together as a duo of artists. We are coming from different fields – Alina is doing her Masters in Photography at Sint-Lukas in Brussels, the same school Ine graduated from in 2014 with a Masters in Painting.

The works currently shown at Kavka are a small selection of a visual dialogue based on a set of rules that Alina and Ine began in April 2016. Alina took the first photograph starting from a circle, a logo found in De Witte Raaf. She sent it to Ine and four days later, Ine sent her own work, as a reaction to the one received from Alina. We made ten works following this system. We have kept the deadline of 4 days ever since. Thus, every work is based formally or content wise on the previous one.

We chose different media to express our ideas. As in any conversation, you can continue or repeat what your interlocutor has said, interrupt it abruptly or make a joke. We did the same using visual means.

Since November 2016, 6 art students have joined our Creative Lab replicating the same way of working. They have been divided in 3 duos and each one of them will take turns in showing work during the following months at Kavka.

This is the 1st part of a series of 7 exhibitions. Between 5/01 and 31/05/2017 DOI Collective and the participants of their Creative Lab will occupy a room at Kavka. Each exhibition will last 3 weeks in the following order:
